I'm curious what people will say after DSII-there really is no game like it out there. I'm surprised by the Soul Reaver comparison though-we have gotten that a few times, but I can absolutely guarantee that at no time in development did that game come up! Maybe the elements of dark fantasy? Regardless, as long as we are compared to the best games out there, and not crappy ones, we'll take it. ![]() ![]() We are very flattered to be compared to games like Zelda, and Shadow of the Colossus, but no, we definitely didn't do it on purpose-if anything we worried about being too similar in some ways. We'd prefer not to get too specific with which games inspired us-people already draw so many comparisons and I think at this point the game stands on its own and has its own identity (the sequel more so than the first). Personally, I love to see great games reflected in newer titles. What influences - both comic book and video game - went into Darksiders? I see a lot of Soul Reaver and Shadow of the Colossus. I have arguably the two coolest jobs on the planet. As for which I enjoy more, I'm just glad to be doing both. I spend a lot more time drawing and less time in meetings or interfacing with art teams. That is not to say that producing a hit comic is easy, it's just a much smaller production. Obviously there is a team dynamic and levels of management that you don't really need to put out a comic book. The types of AAA games we work on cost millions and millions of dollars, and take a large team of over 100 people a few years to develop. Wow, that was back in the day! The two industries are vastly different. ![]() What are the different challenges in working on comics and working on video games? Which do you enjoy more, and why? And of course, I never would have had the opportunity if people didn't already know my work from comics, so that success definitely propelled my career in games.īack when I collected comics, one of my favorite series was the Age of Apocalypse in the X-Men universe which it turns out you worked on. Every studio has their own style, some are very realistic, some very cartoony, for us, this sort of 'stylized realism' that stemmed from my comic work just fit. I don't think it's having a comic book background as much as the particular art style, at least for us at Vigil Games. How does having a comic book background impact your work in video games? I felt like I'd regret it forever if I didn't give it a shot. I'd met lots of people in the game industry, and I was getting burnt creatively in comics. I never really thought about it as a profession though, and having found success in comics at a young age, I didn't even think to pursue it until much later. Games were a huge part of my life growing up, and still are. I've actually been a hardcore gamer since before I ever even saw a comic book. You worked in comic books before moving over to video games. Playing the game with an entirely new protagonist is probably the most notable departure from the first game, but there are a number of new features as well-including a much larger world to explore, much more character customization, quests, a randomized loot (treasure) system and more!
